All hail the King and Queen

Homecoming King and Queen

Staff Writer

Junior Joshua Houchins was named homecoming king and Junior Julia Albrecht was named homecoming queen of 2015.
Along with being the newly crowned homecoming king, following the footsteps of Malic Matthews who won the crown in 2014, Houchins is also involved in Crete Monee’s mixed show choir group Cavaliers, wrestling, and theatre where he often has major roles.

Josh says that he really enjoys being homecoming king because now, people who didn’t know him before now do. He said that he got butterflies while walking with the homecoming queen, Julia Albrecht.
Senior Taylor McKnight said of course she knew him and how handsome he is. She said she has been crushing on him since the eighth grade.
“He’s funny, cool, school spirited and very caring. I have seen Joshua at the football games with a lot of school spirit. He has a lot of paint with our school colors all over his body with no shirt on,” said Taylor. “Every time I see him with no shirt on I would tell him to put a shirt on before he gets sick. “

Justin Pierce does not know who Joshua is but he heard things about him like he is always at the games with a lot of blue and gold on.

Mr. Mohr stated that junior Julia Albrecht, the homecoming queen, is a top-notch student because she is dedicated to Crete in many ways. She is the dance captain in show choir, part of student government, and National Honors Society.

“Without Julia Albrecht there wouldn’t have been a homecoming dance nor a pep rally during homecoming week,” said Mohr.

Overall Joshua’s and Julia’s popularity has seemed to increase after their crowning on

Saturday, September 26 at the homecoming dance.

“Listen to the kids bro!”

One of biggest nights in music occurred on August 31. No, I’m not talking about the Grammy’s; I’m talking about the MTV Video Music Awards, or most commonly known as the VMAs.
As usual a lot of crazy and exciting events happened but possibly one of the most anticipated and interesting things that happened was Kanye West’s acceptance speech for the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, also known as the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Although this award is not an annually given, it has been presented to phenomenal musicians in recent years such as Beyonce (2014), Justin Timberlake (2013), and Britney Spears (2011). Although Beyonce and Justin Timberlake gave performances along with an acceptance speech, Kanye only gave an acceptance speech but a brilliant acceptance speech it was.
To most people Kanye’s speech seemed to be an intoxicated rant about a bunch of nothing. In fact, during Kanye’s speech there were a lot of people asking, “What is Kanye talking about?”
"I don’t understand how they get five people who worked their entire life … sold records, sold concert tickets to come stand on the carpet and for the first time in their life be judged on the chopping block and have the opportunity to be considered a loser!”
One of the most interesting events of his speech was when he called MTV out for continuously playing the clip of his incident with Swift and then by having her present him with the Video Vanguard Award six years later in an effort to produce “more ratings.”

Finally after a passionate monologue about the Millennials and his hope for the future he concluded his speech with a surprise.
“As you probably could’ve guessed by this moment, I have decided, in 2020, to run for president.” Will you vote for Kanye?

What TV Shows are people watching this fall?

America’s favorite past time is no longer baseball but is sitting down on a couch, snuggling up with a bowl of popcorn and watching TV. It’s finally fall and new and returning shows are appearing on television sets all over America so I went out and asked what shows Crete Monee staff and students are looking forward to watching.
Ashley Bartlett, senior, “I’m looking forward to Awkward.” Which premiered on August 31st on MTV.
Shania Jolly, junior, had only one word for me. “Empire.” Empire was Fox’s fastest growing show during the winter season with growing viewers every week. Empire  premiered on September 23 on Fox.
Mr. Lewandowski, football coach and technology teacher states that he doesn’t watch TV but loves Netflix and is currently watching “Dexter” and is excited for the second season of “Gotham” to appear on Netflix.
I received many repeats of the same answers such as Empire and Awkward. Looks like we’re going to have a good season in the name of good old fashioned television.

E- Journalism

By Taylor McKnight
News Editor

There is an after school program at Crete-Monee for people who love to write and want to learn about journalism.

E-Journalism and is run by Mr. Kenealy, who teaches journalism, AP Literature and Junior English.

Students learned how to create a blog by watching a video that shows them step by step what to do when creating a blog. This blog is set up for students to do stories for the online newspaper at Crete-Monee. Students will put stories on the online blog that do not make it to the actual newspaper that will be given out.

Mr. Kenealy said, “Creating this blog will help our stories students have written get out.”

E- Journalism meets once a month and they learn something new every time. E- Journalism members have an opportunity to make stories concerning the school and what goes on inside Crete-Monee.

The newspaper and blog is a good way for students who aren’t involved in extracurricular activities to see what is happening around the school. By figuring out news here at Crete, to hearing from the student’s about their experiences and all the fun games here. Although Mr. Kenealy could not give an exact release date for the online Web site, he did say Crete-Monee will see the newspaper and the online blog in the near future.
